Information lifecycle management, the holy grail of storage management has been plagued by lack of tangible deliverables, immature or inadequate technologies and lack of definition. The storage industry has been struggling for decades to address this problem and the answer lies in focusing on storage infrastructure and leaving grand application visions to those best suited to deliver.
Storage vendors have over the years attempted to leave their comfort zones of infrastructure and add value further up the application stack, integrating application functionality into roadmaps. This has clouded value propositions and made delivery intangible, hurting the perception of ILM.
Customers should expect storage vendors to deliver flexible and cost-effective infrastructure and leave the application challenges to those most capable of solving such problems.
