Recorded audio from the Peer Incite:
Some background material for the call:
Practitioners are finding that traditional array-based solutions cannot meet the cost and data integrity requirements for cloud archiving. Computer science is suggesting a fundamental change to use erasure coding rather than replication. This Peer Incite looks at the future of archiving from a practitioner and standards perspective.
On Tuesday July 26th, the Wikibon community will welcome the storage archive architect from Shutterfly and two members of SNIA's Cloud Archive/Preservation Special Interest Group (SIG). We'll be joined by Justin Stottlemyer, Director of Storage Architecture at Shutterfly, Sebastian Zangaro (Co-Chair SNIA SIG and HP R&D Architect) and Chad Thibodeau (Co-Chair SNIA SIG and Director, Product Management and Alliances at Cleversafe ). Justin will discuss his experiences of architecting the archiving solution at Shutterfly and previous roles at Facebook and eBay where cost and growth are constant burdens.
Areas of discussion:
- Data availability and retention requirements for Web 2.0
- Erasure coding with low-cost hardware
- Archiving for a large scale environment with hyper-growth (> TBs/day)
- Data integrity, failure rate and rebuild times of large storage environments
