XIV Ltd. is a storage company based in Israel which was acquired by IBM late in 2007 in a transaction that was completed in 2008. XIV's primary product originated as Nextra, which XIV claimed to be the first “single-architecture” storage system which eliminates the need to split storage solutions between tiers and architectures.
XIV is led by Moshe Yanai, one of the key architects of data storage systems and instrumental in the development of EMC's Symmetrix. XIV was founded in 2002 by five graduates of the Talpiot program, Israel's elite military program for technology leaders. The Nextra technology has been in development since 2002, with first customer installations in 2005.
TEL AVIV, ISRAEL and ARMONK, NY, January 2, 2008 -- IBM announced today that XIV will become part of the IBM System Storage business unit of the IBM Systems and Technology Group.
