In looking at the top 10 strategic technologies right now, the new computing models spawned by advances in web technology loom large, according to IT research and advisory company Gartner. In defining “strategic technologies,” Gartner says they are the ones that could disrupt IT or business in the next 18 to 36 months—they may require big investments of money, and if they turn out to be important and you adopt them too late, your business may suffer seriously.
Gartner’s top 10 are: Green IT, unified communications, business process modeling, metadata management, virtualization 2.0, mashup and composite applications, web platforms and web-oriented architecture, computing fabric, Real World Web and social software.
As we’ve noted before in previous newsletters, software as a service, infrastructure as a service, cloud computing and other technologies are some of the big drivers of web platform and architecture concerns right now. We’ve also noted how energy costs are pushing the need for greener IT. And we frequently talk about the importance of social networking in relation to being connected with good people who know other good people. What about the others? In our next issue, as well as future issues, we will dive more into unified communications, metadata management, virtualization and some of the others.
