Defining and Quantifying Server SAN
As part of ongoing coverage of Software-led Infrastructure, the Wikibon team put forth a new architecture in January 2014 called Server SAN (market definition) that defines a new category of scale-out server and storage. It is differentiated from hyperscale architectures (sometimes called Distributed DAS - where the application controls the infrastructure) and leverages software-defined storage, flash and other trends to create a simple architecture that replaces storage as a separate device. Server SAN is a systems-level design built from software that should leverage standardized/commodity hardware (including so-called hyperconverged appliances).
In February 2014, a a CrowdChat on Server SAN was held to discuss and debate the architecture, use cases and solutions in the marketplace. This containerized social discussion was hosted by Stu Miniman, Howard Marks and Gunnar Berger. Summary of insights from the discussion on SiliconANGLE: CrowdChat Highlights Resonance of Server SAN (February 6, 2014)
The general availability of VMware Virtual SAN (VSAN) was a significant move for the Server SAN market - Wikibon's Stu Miniman and Jeff Kelly discussed the impact on a CUBE Conversation. (March 13, 2014)
In April 2014, Wikibon CTO David Floyer published a detailed market forecast on Server SAN which predicts a healthy growth rate which will surpass $20B in revenue by 2020.
