Question: Is that true when you have a failed disk in the filer, you must order new ones only from NetApp, otherwise the filer can not recognize the new disks?

This response came in from NetApp:
NetApp sells two types of general-purpose shared-storage controllers. As Dave mentions above the FAS family requires NetApp replacement disks for quality as well as functional reasons. In fact this is often an automatic process triggered via the NetApp AutoSupport feature.
The 2nd category of controllers we sell is called V-Series. You can attach any qualified 3rd-party storage array (i.e. shelf and disk) to a NetApp V-Series if you prefer those to NetApp's disks. However in that case you sacrifice our innovative RAID-DP(6) and SnapLock Compliance (WORM) functionality.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
