Hello Tape Users. How are you monitoring your tape drives and tape cartridges? How do you know if you are about to have a failure or quickly identify if an issue was caused by the drive, the cartridge, or something else?
This is a big hole in nearly every datacenter. Most tape environments do not have the ability to proactively monitor their tape environment or know for sure if they can restore from their D/R media. The reality is that anything can happen to a tape and no one would ever know. The best thing to do is to review your tapes MTBF and properly track your tapes during their rotation process. There are some good tools such as EMC's DPA technology or Bocada, TekTools or Aptare that can keep track of this. Additionally these tools can also track the usage of your tape drives and you can set up maintenance schedules and cleaning schedules to make sure they are maintained regularly to ensure the highest reliability.
However, the real question is, why would anyone still use tape? Disk is so much more reliable and if you have a disk failure, you have RAID to protect the data...
