Intel’s Xeon E5 2600 family of processors, code-named Romley, provides significant enhancements in processor speed that enable increased virtual server densities and more converged infrastructures. These densely-configured, converged infrastructures are critical for efficiencies in public and private cloud architectures that leverage blade servers. Xeon E5, with its embedded support for 10GbE, will also enhance performance in rapidly-growing throughput-intensive applications. These applications, however, will require more than just a processor upgrade for IT to gain full benefit. The balanced-systems approach requires that IT also evaluate the network and network management architecture outside the server, to achieve expected improvements in application performance and user experience. Networking approaches, already adopted within server blades, may be required for rack and tower systems.
Join the Wikibon community as we discuss:
- How can IT administrators align processing performance with network performance to create balanced systems?
- Which workloads are most likely to benefit from the Xeon E5 improvements, and which should be left alone?
- What actions should IT administrators take to get the maximum benefit from Xeon E5 deployments?
- What factors should administrators consider before upgrading rack and tower servers to Xeon E5?
- Which server platforms (blade, rack, and tower) will be most impacted by the Intel Xeon E5 announcement?
- When should migration to blade servers be considered over upgrades of rack and tower servers?
