Have you ever considered working for a small company? Not everyone is well-suited to the small company culture, but with the right matchup of person and position, a small company can open many doors.
For example, IT pros at smaller companies can often contribute on multiple levels. Sure, a job posting might say software developer, but the person who takes that job may also have opportunities to manage projects, conduct business analysis and mentor junior staff. They may also be more likely to directly see the fruits of their labors.
Also, while smaller companies sometimes offer more moderate salaries, those which are serious about hiring good people often pony up attractive benefits packages—sometimes even offering an equity stake in the company. As for culture fit, a family-like atmosphere and “work hard, play hard” philosophy is the norm.
