Computerworld is one of the original IT publications and was once the flagship of IDG's IT publications. Computerworld started as a paid circulation magazine. Founded in the 1970's, Computerworld and it's international brands has an excellent reputation for solid reporting. The CW community is well-respected and ranks among the most active within IT. In the 1990's, competition from CMP's Information Week and Ziff Davis publications, as well as internal competition from IDG in the form of CIO magazine and Infoworld created real pressure on CW to go controlled circulation (i.e. free for qualified readers). Pat McGovern, Chairman of IDG resisted this trend because CW was one of the few paid subscription magazines. CW finally caved to market pressures and went controlled circ and now is primarily an online publication open to the world.
