The name Oracle still conjures images of databases for many people (or thoughts of Delphi, if you’re a fan of ancient Greek history and mythology), but increasingly, people are taking notice of other application-related progress the company is making.
For example, an analyst report recently released by Forrester Research Inc. noted that Oracle’s Application Server, Fusion Middleware, and related technologies have come so far so fast that the company is now a potential challenger to IBM, Microsoft, and BEA Systems. John R. Rymer, a Forrester vice president and research analyst, has even said that, “Oracle at this point has equaled or surpassed what IBM is able to bring to clients” in the field of application server platforms, which he notes are “essentially suites of server products that you would use to create what many people refer to as composite applications today.”
