I am taking a network course and have been asked by the professor to sign up on some IT communities and find out if they are welcoming. Do you feel welcome and able to discuss issues easily without feeling degraded?

Jodi, I have been a journalist in the computer industry for 28 years. I came out of daily newspapers in 1981 and had an English major in school, so I do not have a technical background. In those years I have done a large number of interviews with experts in their field. I am sure they all realized immediately that I am nothing like an expert, yet they have always treated me well, taken my questions seriously, and answered them completely. I have never been treated disrespectfully by anyone, including people at the very top of the industry.
As long as you respect the people you talk with and make an effort to understand what they are saying and get things right, they will in turn respect you. There is no such thing as a stupid question; most people in the industry welcome the chance to communicate.
