Are you aware of any statistics wrapped around encyrption and/or key management? I'm interested in finding out if you're aware of any metrics like "Encrypted TB/FTE" or something similar.

Cathy - would you be more specific? Are you looking for total TB of data encrypted and key managed in storage? Would this include desktop storage? Would you also explain the FTE aspect?
Thanks
Mike

Cathy - Some interesting metrics to consider, according to IDC
-- 1800 exabytes in the digital universe by 2011
-- 45% of which are security intensive (requiring high levels of data protection);
-- 35% of which are compliance intensive (requiring privacy control)
From these you could break our enterprise storage, vs MP3, DVD, digital cameras, etc all of which have proprietary encryption (but little key management) built in.

So basically I'm just trying to get my arms around any metrics that reflect how much encrypted tape data is controlled by encryption key maagers. This doesn't include desktop stroage - it's really the backup tape encryption environment.

You're welcome. I'll be with Iron Mountain execs next week. I'll see what I can get from them.

Fanstastic and much appreciated Mike - thanks!

A few data points from discussions at Iron Mountain Analyst day:
- primary storage encrypted <15%
- primary storage key managed 1-3%
- tapes (going forward) encrypted/manual key managed - 40-50%
- tapes (looking back) encrypted/key managed <10%
