The rapid growth in server virtualization has dramatically improved server utilization and efficiency. However the effect on backup from consolidating physical resources has been to constrict previously available capacity for performing backups. To address VMware backup resource constraints, VMware has introduced a new feature in the VMkernal built into the storage stack called Changed Block Tracking (CBT).
CBT can be accessed by third party apps through the vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP) to streamline backup and address backup constraints. For customers, this represents an opportunity to re-design backup approaches and potentially improve returns.
At the next Peer Incite Research Meeting we’ll be joined by Henry Robinson of VMware and Peter Imming of Symantec to discuss:
- What is VADP?
- How are third party applications taking advantage of VMware backup enhancements?
- How are customers applying new VMware capabilities?
- What's required to exploit VADP and CBT?
- How will data deduplication evolve to address VADP and CBT?
