To Ken Osterberg of Seagate: As a server and storage OEM, we currently use 1TB SATA drives in our energy efficient Storage BladeRacks. We can deploy and efficiently cool 672 drives in a single rack. As you can imagine, every fraction of a watt of power matters when we do our power analysis and comparisons to competing technologies. Can you share with me the expected power differences between the 1TB drives and the 2TB drives planned for release later this year?
Thanks in Advance,
Kevin Greggans Verari Systems Inc.
Response
The next generation of 2TB 7,200rpm drives should have very similar power consumption to the 1TB drives.
Specifically for Seagate, our 2TB drive that will be shipping in 2009 is expected to have slightly better power consumption than it's 1TB predecessor and will have additional idle power management modes that allow trading off response time for additional power savings. The product manual for the current 1TB drive can be found at Barracuda® ES.2 1TB SATA Spec and page 10 provides specific detail on power consumption. The product manual and detailed power specifications for the 2TB drive will be available after the drive is launched and measurment testing is completed.
