What are the currently available source side de-dupe solutions?
I would look very carefully at solutions that make "claims" about offering "source side" deduplication. There are a number of folks that believe that if you just "off load" the deduplication at the media server you are doing source side deduplication. This is simply not the case. Source side deduplication means, by definition that the deduplication takes place on the source. The only real folks that do this are EMC / Avamar, Symantec w/ Puredisk, Asigra and if you are in a VMware environment then you may get some advantages with PHD Virtual.
The other technologies Dave mentions do "claim" source side dedupe, even EMC / Data Domain "claim" this but they don't do source dedupe. They take some of the IP and put this on the media server such that data from the media server to the dedupe device is moved more efficiently but I still need to move ALL of the data (incremental or full) from the client to the media server before I see any affect. In a VMware environment the main bottle neck IS the client (physical server) so there is no benefit.
