can you describe quantum's play in big data?

Quantum's StorNext Appliances are purpose-built for Big Data with big files, providing high-performance and highly scalable solutions. The solutions include StorNext Metadata Appliances for high-performance file sharing, StorNext AEL Archives for cost-effective near-line storage and offline data retention, StorNext Q-Series Storage for high-speed primary storage and StorNext Gateway.

Jeff Kelly may be able to provide a better answer but generally in our Big Data reports we're looking for solutions that store data using different techniques-- because the data is a different texture or size or has unique performance requirements.
This is almost purely software driven. As such many so-called Big Data hardware solutions are white boxes going into Big Data use cases. DDN is a good example. DDN considers everything it ships as Big Data - 100%. We don't include 100% of their shipments - only those that go into emerging so-called Big Data use cases.
An obvious example might be Hadoop use cases where data is distributed and function (code) is shipped to the data rather than data to a box running code.
Isilon is another good example. EMC calls Isilon Big Dat in general terms whereas we would look at much of Isilon (and others like it ) as Big NAS - but not necessarily Big Data.
Having said all this - we have "blind spots" at Wikibon and would be interested based on our (admittedly fuzzy) definition of Big Data - what about StoreNext makes it Big Data?

Agree totally that not all of Quantum's products fit in the Big Data area but the StoreNext product should be considered. StoreNext is specifically aimed at Big Data and how it is ingested, shared, stored and archived. Many companies in the Media and Entertainment, Life Sciences, Oil and Gas, Enterprise Video and Government use StoreNext to manage their Big Data. for example The Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) use StoreNext to manage a tiered storage solution centered on Quantum StorNext® data management software to provide
high-performance file sharing and data protection.
