Virtualization is a technology that is successfully permeating IT shops. The “next big thing” in virtualization is believed to be desktop virtualization, but the hype over the last few years has outstripped deployments. VDI has been significant focus by vendors, including major new releases in 2010 from Citrix and VMware, and initiatives by almost every storage company. VDI is now more than just for simplifying the management of Windows machines as evident from efforts like VMware’s End-User Computing, Cisco’s Virtualization Experience Infrastructure (VXI), and the VDI Coalition.
See the Wikibon VDI Infographic
To understand the state of solutions and the implications for end-users, we've invited several well-known bloggers and respected technologists including:
- Glenda Canfield @glendacanfield
- Michael Keen @michael_keen http://www.michaelkeen.info
- Jason Langone @langonej http://www.ThinkVirt.com
Premise of the call... The idea embodied in virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) needs to evolve to be more widely adopted within organizations. Specifically, value from virtual client infrastructure must move beyond a tie to any specific physical device (e.g. a desktop or laptop) more toward providing secure platform-agnostic access to any device, any data and any app...from anywhere at any time. The focal point of VDI is moving from the PC device to the end user and the apps and data that individual wishes to access.
Some of the key client issues that we will explore:
- Where does VDI make sense today- Is adoption use case or vertical market driven?
- What does it take to deploy desktop virtualization/VDI and what are the infrastructure implications on servers, storage, networks, clients, etc.
- What's the impact of Windows 7
- Is desktop virtualization ready for broad adoption?
