Posting your resume online is often necessary, but don’t try to saturate the Internet with it. Likewise, organizations need to use job boards to fill positions, but they should also be strategic about it. The more people or sites in your network, the harder it is to manage, meaning that the ones you really need could suffer.
As a single node in the social network, you create lines of connections to others, so establish connections with people who have good connections themselves. This limits the number of relationships you need to maintain, while maximizing your gains.
Nurture relationships with people who are naturally good at, and enjoy, the process of meeting people and introducing them to others with similar needs or interests. Also, seek people who know lots of other people with skills or experience you value. For example, professional recruiters and salespeople spend hours each day reaching out to people, connecting with them, exploring their needs and understanding what drives their decisions.
Just remember to focus on quality and relevance—the right recruiting firms; the right connectors.
