Just because January is gone doesn’t mean it’s too late to state a resolution this year, so why not make it ensuring that you are where you want to be career-wise and making sure your skills are being noticed and properly leveraged?
The prospects for skilled IT workers look good going into this year, but that doesn’t mean you can just sit around waiting for the best opportunities to land in your lap.
Now may be time to ramp up the networking and beef up the résumé, but it may also be time to examine your internal networking strategy. Make sure you are tapped into both formal and informal decision networks at your company. Frankly, whether it’s time to move out or move up, revisiting your skills and choosing some areas to hone can only help your career track.
Particularly if you have business skills to advertise along with your technical skills (like experience in finance or bio/pharma), you need to make that known—hybrid business-IT workers are in demand and often command the premium salaries right now. A rising job market is exactly the wrong time to be in stealth mode.
