Amazon's Elastic Block Store (EBS) offering was made available to the public in August 2008. It provides raw block devices that can be accessed by Amazon EC2 instances. EBS provides SAN-like storage to Amazon EC2 customers with a number of advanced features including larger volume sizes, snapshots and other copy services such as replication for high availability.
