More than eighty percent of Wikibon users say their storage budgets will be cut in 2009. In these tight economic times, IT departments will be combing their budgets looking for line items to eliminate, reduce or better leverage. For CIO’s the management focus over the next 12-18 months will shift from return on investment (ROI) to return on assets deployed (ROA). Storage infrastructure will need to accommodate this trend and allow storage administrators to:
- Provide a cost effective ‘default’ data store for mainstream applications (i.e. Avoiding Tier 1 where possible)
- Extend the use of existing equipment to support new initiatives
- Simplify migration to allow for truly non-disruptive change and minimize conversion inefficiency
- Reclaim wasted space through the use of tools that improve utilization and provisioning efficiencies
The next Peer Incite is going to focus on these issues in an effort to answer the question as posted on Wikibon: How will storage executives address budget cuts in 2009? Grant, an experienced Senior Storage Administrator at a large financial firm will discuss using heterogeneous storage virtualization and tiered storage infrastructure management. We'll use LSI’s new Storage Virtualization Manager (SVM) platform as an example of how to reduce costs and simplify storage management. Nelson Nahum, an LSI Fellow and technical expert will explain the SVM technology and LSI’s methodology to support such cost cutting initiatives.
The Wikibon community invites you to discuss the application of heterogeneous storage virtualization to create a storage infrastructure that meets these business objectives and supports a more cost effective use of installed assets.
