SvSAN High Availability for ESXi makes affordable business continuity possible for news aktuel

Founded in 1989 with more than 130 employees at 5 locations across Germany, news aktuell delivers press releases to the media and financial markets as well as offer editorial addresses and seminar organization to its customers.

The Problem

news aktuell faced the age-old problem, how to achieve high availability at multiple sites without breaking the bank? Moving away from VMware was not an option, and after months of research there seemed to be no alternative other than to license all the ESXi systems.

“Unfortunately this was not financially possible, as the initial investment was too high and would have prevented us from continuing our virtualization through VMware, We needed to find an interim solution.”

The Solution

Finally they came across StorMagic and found that SvSAN would not only be able to leverage the server storage and create the required shared datastore for High Availability but that StorMagic was also in the late stages of developing high availability for ESXi and ESXi Essentials.

“We put SvSAN’s HA to the test and it does exactly what is says on the tin.” Says Steffen Clausjuergens, “When it is released in September we’ll be deploying it in some of news aktuell’s branches across Germany to be managed centrally at the head office in Hamburg”

IT is a significant consumer of energy and IT energy costs have been rising disproportionately because of continued investment in denser IT equipment. Estimates from the EPA and others indicate that IT will account for 3% of energy consumption by 2012.
