Business in the Cloud Seminar Follow-up

As I have previously announced, I have recently participated at a very informative cloud event, hosted by Security Innovation: http://web.securityinnovation.com/boston and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organizers for this opportunity.

The meeting was very informative, Security Innovation did an excellent job discussing how companies can increase application security and also described what happened in the market with several large companies that recently had security issues.

I would like to write this follow-up post for those who could not attend, based on my speech.

I discussed how ConnectEDU had to meet the challenge to be able to support millions of online users. We found the solution in cloud computing and in the CISCO UCS platform, which gave us the scalability and flexibility that we needed to meet demand during the peak of activity on College admissions.

I also showcased some case studies on migrating from a physical environment to the cloud, topic on which you can find out more here: http://www.rickscloud.com/going-virtual-for-internal-it-systems/

I finally got to the topic that probably most of the audience was most interested in: cost savings. The implementation I have performed for ConnectEDU is a good example of decreasing IT costs by 30% and achieving ongoing monthly savings of over 40%. Here are some more resources on the topic: http://www.rickscloud.com/how-i-efficiently-migrated-to-iaas/ and http://www.rickscloud.com/cloud-computing-decreases-production-infrastructure-expenses-by-over-30-for-web-based-leader-in-education-management/

I believe that all cloud computing evangelists should take the time to learn from others and, also, to share and exchanged knowledge, be it on Twitter, LinkedIn, Quora or face to face at an event. I look forward to meeting you all at future cloud events in the Boston area!

Financial giant goes green

The corporate IT group of a very large, worldwide financial organization with 100,000 employees, has initiated an ongoing “greening” process. This is focused largely on reducing energy use both to decrease the corporation's carbon footprint while creating a net savings in operational costs over the lifetime of new, more energy-efficient equipment, including new storage systems.

Planning a Green Storage Initiative

Fluctuating energy prices have heightened electricity and energy consumption as a major issue within the technology community. IT is a significant consumer of energy and IT energy costs have been rising disproportionately because of continued investment in denser IT equipment. Estimates from the EPA and others indicate that IT will account for 3% of energy consumption by 2012.
