Businesses thinking more about IT security

A recent study by “The Info Pro” showed that companies are going to be spending more on their security budgets next year as many businesses are starting to realise the importance of IT security and the potential threats. There have been many instances this year in which sensitive data has ended up with the wrong recipient.

The study was released last Friday and the most obvious statistic that appeared in the study was that 45% of respondents had increased their security budgets in the last year and are looking to increase them in the coming year.

The companies questioned in the study have increased their budget from 1 million dollars to 1.5 million dollars, which is a huge amount. A massive percentage of 47% said that their security budget would increase more in years to come. An important aspect of IT security that was apparent in the study was mobile device management. This was key for businesses as many employees access their mobile device to obtain secure company information and important documents that shows that managing mobile devices is vital to businesses.

Another reason why mobile management is important is the fact that many people often mis-lay their mobile phones and tablets so they can easily fall into the wrong hands, so the data on the devices needs to be protected. 20% of the businesses questioned said that they were looking to work on their mobile device management enterprises next year.

Endpoint security was another aspect of IT security that was a key area for many of the businesses, this came second after mobile management device.

Virtualization Energizes Cal State University

John Charles is the CIO of California State University, East Bay (CSUEB) and Rich Avila is Director, Server & Network Operations. In late 2007 they were both looking down the barrel of a gun. The total amount of power being used in the data center was 67KVA. The maximum power from the current plant was 75kVA. PG&E had informed them that no more power could be delivered. They would be out of power in less than six months. A new data center was planned, but would not be available for two years.

Storage Virtualization Design and Deployment

A main impediment to storage virtualization is the lack of multiple storage vendor (heterogeneous) support within available virtualization technologies. This inhibits deployment across a data center. The only practical approach is either to implement a single vendor solution across the whole of the data center (practical only for small and some medium size data centers) or to implement virtualization in one or more of the largest storage pools within a data center.
