Should DR,BDR,BC plans be expensive

I have read many comments regarding Disaster Recovery. I do not believe that DR requires adding additional staffed locations to provide effective protection from disasters.

We have put together a simple solution that is not as costly as many of those suggested. Our plan involves creating a virtual DR location that can be accessed over the Internet from virtually any location.

Our plan is simple and I’ll try to keep it short and to the point.

Step 1)Install disk backup equipment at your primary location. This equipment could be a NAS, Server Array, or a SAN depending on the amount of storage needed. This equipment should:

  • Perform incremental backups every 10-15 minutes.
  • Be able to virtualize any server at any time that it is needed, for instance to respond to a server failure, install a patch upgrade, or support maintenance.

Step 2) Install a copy of the DR equipment at a secure secondary site. Depending on data security needs, the user can add extra locations to decrease the chance of data loss.

Our solution has the ability to perform down to the block level and virtualized servers at any given time or event as needed, even if the dadta center runs on multiple platforms.

The total amount of power being used in the data center was 67KVA. The maximum power from the current plant was 75kVA. PG&E had informed them that no more power could be delivered. They would be out of power in less than six months. A new data center was planned, but would not be available for two years.
