Strata Conference: The Continuing Story of Hadoop

I’m back from Strata Conference and after three days, 16 keynote presentations, countless sessions, 20+ hours of live coverage via theCUBE, and two very long flights from Boston to Silicon Valley and back, these things I’m sure of:

  1. Big Data, namely Hadoop, is for real.
  2. It still has some maturing to do.

You know a technology is headed to the mainstream when the two “Elite” sponsors of the premier event designed to showcase that technology are Microsoft and EMC. Neither company is known for adopting and promoting emerging open source technologies, to put it mildly. But there they both were at Strata Conference, the event dedicated to open source Big Data approaches like Hadoop and NoSQL, topping the list of event sponsors. They were followed not far behind by fellow IT giants and Strata “Impact” sponsors IBM and Oracle.

Big Data in Small Bytes: The Best Big Data Takeaways from Day One Keynotes at Strata 2012

Strata Conference 2012: Making Data Work. Three days of in-depth discussions, tutorials, and sessions on building a data-driven business.

How much data is big data? Consider This: #TheCube generates as much as a quarter of a terabyte every day, and that does not include viewership multiples (thousands of viewers per day).

Wednesday’s keynotes brought together thought leaders from across the information technology space. The potential explosion in collective knowledge they bring to the table feels like it could blow the roof off of the Santa Convention Center. With each keynote scheduled to last just ten minutes, the pace was brisk and energizing, much like the Big Data storm ahead of us.

Strata Conference: The Big Data Wave is Coming

Last week, O’Reilly Media held the inaugural Strata “Making Data Work” Conference. The buzz of the conference was well beyond the 1400 people on-site (originally capped at 1000). SiliconAngle and Wikibon covered the event with a live video broadcast with over 30 guests (see the videos here). This wave has strong ties to the other big technology trends of the day: cloud computing, mobile and social. Big data is still nascent, so the definitions and boundaries of what is and isn’t big data are up for debate. What is clear is that a lot of people and companies believe that we can flip the challenges of the explosive growth of data into opportunities by creating new products and services.
