Couldn't agree with you more. But some effort toward integrated solution offerings in a market that relies on the most prestigious and qualified vendors to address the growing security challenge would be well worth it. Security continues to be a big, big question in most enterprises, virtual or not, and end-users more than ever are looking for straight through, end-to-end security solutions that I think EMC can deliver on.

It seems to be EMC's way with larger acquisitions, doesn't it Mike? Generally let the P&L run and give it room to succeed. That said, I do think RSA is an asset with IP that EMC could more aggressively in its portfolio. There's always a trade-off and Frank S. is facing that today...spend the time, energy and money to integrate or focus on execution. EMC's ethos encourages the latter.

Hi Steve. You and I have talked about this haven't we? I thought your EMCworld presentation was one of the most lucid visions I'd seen about data reduction across the portfolio-- ever. But the question I've always had is will EMC do the integration work necessary to realize the vision you put forth. I hope so. I'd be happy for my skepticism to be proven wrong. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the comments Gary. I think the world is increasingly moving to disk-based backup, yes. Although a recent 'show of hands' survey at the Storage Decisions conference indicated only about 1/3 of the audience had installed de-duplication solutions.

Tape will not disappear and I didn't mean to imply that. But for many applications, tape is becoming the solution of last resort. It's removable, reliable, proven and in a true DR scenario, shoving a bunch of tapes on a truck will give you better bandwidth than transferring data over the wire.

But local copies and remote disk-based copies are becoming the norm for recovery of data that is 'less old.'
