In today’s uncomfortable economic climate it is a welcome relief to read that folks still have the inclination to extend a helping hand. Red Nose Day is a nationwide fundraising event organized by Comic Relief every two years in the UK. This year the event raised over $80M which will go a long way to help many disadvantaged folks.
3PAR was approached by the organizers with a request to help them with the back-end storage environment. Their existing infrastructure was a patchwork of medium class arrays and the fear was that it did not have the horse power to meet the transactional load expected during the event. As you know if you cannot handle the incoming calls on a fundraising night you lose money. 3PAR heard the call and donated the use of one of their T-Class Storage Servers to beef up the existing storage infrastructure at Carrenza Hosting, the Comic Relief hosting company who was also a 3PAR customer. This additional resource enabled Carrenza to handle over 500,000 transactions in seven hours that netted over $80M in donations. This transaction volume was apparently triple the evening traffic during the previous event in 2007 and double the peak traffic ever experienced on the night of a television fundraising event. The additional 3PAR system is credited with enabling Carrenza to smoothly manage this bubble of high transactional volume and facilitate a rapid transition from donor call to cash booked.
My congratulations to the team at 3PAR, particularly the man at the top David Scott.
