Wikibon Community Embarks on Green Storage Best Practices Initiative

Wikibon is pleased to announce that it has increased its commitment to assisting IT organizations in better understanding actions that can lower power consumption of storage. The goal of the initiative is to utilize the collective knowledge of community to create an ongoing series of best practice content for IT professionals to reduce energy costs and carbon footprints. All content produced under this effort will be posted on Wikibon and made available under the GNU Free Documentation License for anyone to freely use.

The Wikibon community met on October 30th, 2007 at its weekly Peer Incite Meeting to kickoff the initiative. The results of the Green storage procurement options Peer Incite have been posted along with a Wikibon How-to note entitled Planning a green storage initiative. The How-to note is open for editing by the public and will continue to evolve. The community has a stated goal of producing a first final draft (non stub) of the How-to note by early December 2007.

Several industry participants have expressed an interest in supporting the initiative including numerous IT professionals, vendor organizations and consultants. On December 4th, 2007, noted industry analyst Nicholas Allen of The Tod Point Group will lead a discussion on Disc drive power consumption: What can be done?. Nick is a veteran of the storage industry and was a leading Gartner analyst for well over a decade.

The Wikibon community would like to acknowledge and thank a number of vendor and industry organizations that have stepped forth to offer resources, knowledge and/or content in this important collaboration including:

  • AnalystPerspectives
  • ASHRAE
  • Dot Hill Systems
  • EMC Corporation
  • Hitachi Data Systems
  • IBM
  • LSI Corp.
  • Sun Microsystems

The community welcomes the participation of these constituencies and is in the process of reaching out to numerous other organizations in the hope that collectively, metrics and best practices can be made more available, open and meaningful to IT customers.
