Consumer storage services are typically built from basic racks of drives (white boxes with racks of Seagate drives) and Linux servers. The major software component is a proprietary distributed file system optimized for write once, read many files with appended writes.

They typically operate in highly efficient computing centers distributed to optimize the balance between bandwidth, and storage costs and performance. The system is tolerant of failure of any component of the system including software and hardware, and is self-healing. They are designed to be very easy to enhance, incredibly easy to operate and even more incredibly easy for end-users. The charging for services is easy to understand and administer.

Typical costs are $2 per Gigabyte per year.
