NAND was introduced in the late 1980's and has characteristics that make it a suitable for use in secondary storage applications such as hard disk drives. While the technology is much more expensive than disk drives, NAND has fast erase and write times and is efficient allowing greater capacities and lower costs relative to other types of semiconductor disks.
